S: How and when did you start collecting?
MH: I started collecting statues\figures around 2010 - usually whatever game I was playing or anime I watched at the time. Then around 2013 I moved into Kotobukiya Bishojou figures - had really big collection of those. Then around 2017 there was a Lady Death Sideshow premium format that I just had to have! This moved the collection from the smaller 1/6 scale to 1/4 scale.
S: What do you collect? Does your collection have a theme, such as Star Wars, Batman, superheroes, etc.?
MH: Yes, my collection currently has three themes: the primary theme is X-Men which is a mixture of Sideshow and XM. The second is a Femme fatale theme with Lady Death, Red Sonja and Witchblade. Final theme is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a childhood favourite of mine. Having themes for a collection is very important - I had to sell some cool statues that just didn’t fit into my collection.
S: What are your favourite or the most prized pieces in your collection? And why?
MH: I’ve got three favourite statues in my collection, the first is Red Sonja She-Devil with a sword by Sideshow and sculpted Will Hartbottle - to this day in my opinion still one of the best female statues made. Second would be XM Emma Frost (could be considered Emma Frost on throne), the detail on the hell fire chair is insane and the two different portraits completely change the look of the statue. Third is Sideshow Cable - I found this statue last year during Covid-19 lockdown and started my X-Men collection.
S: What items are on your wishlist?
MH: Current items I’ve got on pre-order are Sideshow Rogue, Sideshow Deadpool, Sideshow Storm, XM Psylocke and my first custom, Exoresin Savage Land Rogue. Wishlist would be Sideshow Vampirella, Sideshow Gambit, XM Magneto (white version) and XM Dark Phoenix, best female statue from XM to date!
S: What do you think of the collecting community in SA?
MH: The local collecting community has grown so much over the last few years (still very small if you compare to Asia or the States) but there are some local collectors with some insane collections. The local distributors have grown as well. Gone are the days of having to pay insane shipping and import taxes to get Sideshow or XM statues.
